From strawberry curry to chocolate Burrito, IBM’s A.I. chef finds unusual combinations that work

IBM has developed an Artificial Intelligence Chef. It’s called Watson and it uses algorithms to come up with new recipes. It has already suggested such wonders as the Austrian Chocolate Burrito, Strawberry Curry and Baltic Apple pie with a layer of pork.

Known as ‘cognitive cooking’ Watson uses machine learning to analyse huge amounts of cooking-related data to come up with new and exciting recipes. The AI swotted up on the chemical compunds of thousands of different foods and read an enormous database of recipes including all the recipes in the back catalogue of cooking magazine Bon Appétit. You can suggest from 1-4 ingredients and specify a style (e.g. Italian, Chinese, Indian etc.) and it will create recipes on the spot.

Now we have a robot chef, as predicted by the Smash Potato adverts

Chefs around the world are using Watson and it has already released its own cook book ‘Cognitive Cooking with Chef Watson’ https://www.amazon.com/Cognitive-Cooking-Chef-Watson-Innovation/dp/149262571X

“Watson has shown me how to form combinations that I would not have thought possible.” (Suan Walter Sink (Chef and Food Blogger)

Some of the more unusual recipes that Watson has suggested include:

Bonus fact: Watson Artificial Intelligence has also beaten all the top Jeopardy! contestants.
