A french artist tightroped between the twin towers

Known as the “artistic crime of the century” in 1974 Phillipe Petit snuck past security, climbed to the 110th floor, fired a crossbow with a wire attached and walked 8 times over the 61 metre gap between the towers, then the tallest in the world at 1,350 feet (411 metres).

Ignoring the police’s demands for him to come down, and despite the wind, for 45 minutes Petit walked, danced, lay down and even knelt to salute the thousands of onlookers who had stopped in the street.
