‘Mad Jack’ fought in WW2 with a bow and arrow

Jack Churchill (no relation to Winston) also known as ‘Mad Jack’ was a British soldier famous for his bravery and eccentricities in World War 2. He always went to battle with a Scottish broadsword, longbow and bagpipes. He was also known for fearlessly leading from the front.

Once at the Battle of l’Epinette Churchill his unit was trapped by Nazis. He whipped out his bow and arrow and shot a Nazi soldier before grabbing two of their machine guns and firing them in abandon using up all the ammunition and creating a distraction while his fellow soldiers could get away. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order medal for gallantry, twice.
