The fastest plane in the world is the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird which clocked a staggering 2,193 mph!
Since 1976 this U.S Airforce plane has held the record for the fastest air-breathing manned aircraft.
It had no need for any defence systems against surface to air missiles as it could outrun any missile.
Out of the 32 that were made none were lost to enemy action.
